After failing to overcome a tricky path a few times, I suggested that Ollie needed to try a different approach and plan a strategy for his next attempt.
Much to my surprise he listened (he’s 13, so usually knows best) and flopped down on the floor to visualise how he could do it. Looking up, he checked the footholds, considered what hadn’t worked and explored the options available.
Did he make it?
Nope! But he got further, did it faster, looked stronger and was more confident.
He has a couple of blisters to show for it, but he’s absolutely sure he’s going to nail it next time.
And, he knows exactly how he’s going to go about it.
He’s clear, energised, motivated and ready to tackle the challenge.
It reminded me that what can feel like failure and frustration, is actually progress and learning in disguise.
When things get tough, it's always worth stepping back, checking the lay of the land and making a plan to take the next step.
Any other advice for a 13 year old 100% welcome... 😉
